This is a very early 1961 Vega Earl Scruggs signature model 5-string banjo made in Boston, Mass. The early serial number is A-100823 on the yellow Vega label attached to the wood rim. This early Scruggs model has the single coordinatior rod with the two allen head screw micro neck adjusters ( as shown in one of the attached pictures). Vega later went to the two coordinator rod system. This neck is ultra straight and has great action. This banjo also has the Earl Scruggs designed "detuners" which was an option, and also has the orignal Vega sliding 5th string capo which was an option and is seldom seen. Naturally, this Vega banjo has the famous tubaphone tone ring. It's amazing that the banjo is as loud as it is with this style tone ring. Its as loud as my Gibson mastertone flat-tops.
The fretboard is as new with no wear grooves, worn frets or any of those issues. The real mother of pearl inlays are all great as well. As you study this banjo up close you can immediately tell that it has seen very little use. The metal finishing appears as new. There is no buckle rash or scratches on the resonator. There are several small nicks or chips in some areas of the neck with a larger nick or wear mark near the heek of the neck probably caused by a banjo strap and consistant with a 51 year old banjo. Overall it is in excellent conditon and the new owner will enjoy desplaying it and playing it. Its a wonderful survivor. The hardshell case is also in very good conditon.
