Mid-80's Gibson Earl Scruggs Banjo
Pics at the More Info URL below.
Honey color curly maple neck and resonator, 3-ply maple rim, 20-hole flathead tone ring, one-piece flange, ebony fretboard with hearts and flowers inlay, non-original (adjustable) Presto tailpiece, Schaller D tuners, newer Remo head. All hardware is nickel plated. Spikes installed for 5th string capo. The label is signed by the late Mr. Scruggs.
The frets and board are in great shape. The neck has some finish wear on one side, and numerous holes for a sliding capo on the opposite side. It appears they couldn't make up their mind exactly where to put it (?). Also, there is some strap wear and a dent/ding at or near the heel, and some minor finish checking on the resonator.
This is definitely a player's instrument. If you're looking for a mint, or even an excellent example, this one isn't it, at least not to me. The cosmetics issues are just that, and don't affect the sound or play-ability in any way. I just want to make sure any potential buyer is aware of them to prevent any misunderstandings later.
One oddity to me is the absence of "Mastertone" in the block. This particular one is blank. I believe BHO member/builder Richie Dotson sells these on eBay for about 20 bucks. The other mystery is the cut-out in the flange below the tailpiece. This appears to have been done prior to plating.
Anyway, I'll be happy to answer any questions regarding this instrument. If you are within driving distance of 75633, you're welcome to come by to inspect and play it in person.
The asking price is $2595 + shipping, which is considerably less than these have been bringing on eBay. Buy it here, and I'll donate 2% of the sales price to Eric in support of the BHO.
It will come in a new Guardian hard shell case.
