I’ve been enjoying building gas can and cigar box banjos. I now have more than I can play and have a couple to offer for sale. Here is the details on the first. Can: 1-gallon vintage gas can. Neck: Built in style of cigar box guitar, which means it started as a 1x2 piece of red oak. I scarf jointed the top of the neck and added a 1/8” x 3/8” inch of steel as a type of truss rod through the center of neck before adding the 1/4" oak fingerboard. I then add a 1/4” piece of oak for the 5th string to run over, but the frets do not extend over this board. The neck runs all the way through the can and the strings attach without a tailpiece. I have shaped the neck to have nice feel to my hand, although it is not as thin at the nut as most standard banjos. The neck is raw wood, no stain or finish. Tuners are economy grade from Stewart McDonald and strings are medium gauge. String action is nice and playable all the way up the neck. It has a basic piezo pickup installed (hidden in the vent on the top of the can). Priced to sell fast at $100. There is a video on my personal page that gives you a sound sample of this instrument.
