A very nice example of an early John Hartford model Deering—1998, gloss finish, with the engraved truss rod cover. This is a model with the standard length neck (22 frets) and the traditional resonator setup.
This is my first experience with a Hartford model—I was interested in seeing how much difference the integral Grenadillo tonering/rim setup makes. My impression is that there is no loss of volume, and no loss of crispness with light strings and a tight head tension. However, a looser head and heavier strings give it an attractive warmth and depth to the sound.
Maple, gloss finish, ebony fingerboard, with the attractive Hartford "Riverboat" inlay pattern; a very handsome banjo. Deering features Noam Pikelny on their homepage with his Hartford model.
I've listed its condition as "Very Good." Some would characterize it as "Excellent" but it does have typical minor blemishes and dings consistent with its age. I have leveled and crowned the frets, installed a new nut, and done some cosmetic touchups. It is in fine structural condition, and I was impressed playing it as a bluegrass instrument as well as in a clawhammer style.
Interesting trades in banjos, mandolins, and guitars always considered, and if you'd prefer a cash transaction, I'll of course consider reasonable offers.
Thanks for looking.
Best,
John
