This is a new Barry Sholder Gourd Fretless 5 string Banjo #048 "Fencepost"
The only thing missing on this banjo is the Barbed wire. This is what you might call a"green" banjo. I wanted to leave everything on it as natural as possible. The name "Fencepost" comes from the fact the the peghead overlay is a slice of fence post that I found in a field on my mother-in-laws farm. I really don't know what kind of wood it is but it is natural although it has been hardened so it won't fall apart. The neck is made from Gummed American Cherry that has long streaks of pulpwood. The wood itself has been chemically grayed up for that knarly look, but has been finished with epoxy for a smooooth hard finish. The tuners are Ebony friction violins, and the banjo is strung with a custom set of DiAddario nylon and composite classical guitar strings. These have a harder feel than Nylguts.
The gourd measures 9 1/2"dia x 5"deep and has a 2 1/2" soundport on the upper portion of the gourd for better bass. As with all my banjos I coat the interior with fiberglass resin to improve the acoustics. The gourd is covered in goatskin. The tailpiece is a Romero style which keep the strings from touching the edge of the gourd. All my banjos are signed and numbered.
Don't let the fretless part scare you. If you have played oldtime banjo or clawhammer your fingers will know where to go.
