OK - I have found the guitar that I want, so I just need the cash to buy it;-) Soooooo - reducing the price on this Calico to $1900 firm to get it out the door. Just saw one sell on THE big auction site last week for $2900 but it was on for a long time before selling. The point is, this is a good deal, and should allow you even have a little room to make on it if you have the right connections.
Deering Calico Banjo with Fults 1934 tailpiece, Kat Eyz bridge and short 5th-string capo. This instrument sounded great straight from the factory but these add-ons make it really pop. I use light strings and the current set-up is low and easy, but Deerings are straightforward to adjust and the Fults makes it particularly simple if your strings set higher.
Serial Number 0869704 e469 (Which I believe means it was made in August 2004 and there were 697 of them made)
Fancy curly maple, honey finish neck & resonator, ivoroid binding & checkered purfling around sides of resonator and ebony fretboard, fancy pearl inlay, bound & inlaid peghead, planetary tuners, resonator walls tapered to project sound forward, nickel hardware. Shaped wooden archtop hardshell case with Deering logo and locking latch.
I intend to use the proceeds from the sale to pick up a couple of used Taylor or Martin Guitars for me and my daughter, so I am willing to consider a trade if appropriate
.
Very Clean - The only genuine blemish I am aware of is a small screw hole on the top of the neck where a longer version of the 5th-string capo was attached. The hole is almost imperceptibly different from the black dots that mark the frets, but it is not aligned identically to the fret-marker dots. The head is slightly worn and there are very minor indentations in the glossy finish on the back of the resonator where shirt-buttons have rubbed against it but unless you hold it up very close and in harsh light they you will not see them. Case has minor outside blemishes and inside where neck first meets case is frayed a bit.
Took it into a major chain guitar store yesterday and left it to be appraised while I headed for the guitar section. My wife (unintentionally of course) was lurking nearby when they got it tuned up and started picking. A customer exclaimed "Wow, that sounds great!" I should have given him a tip:-) They offered me a fair price but wouldn't negotiate on the guitar side enough to get me what I wanted, and I have a specific guitar in mind at this point. Would love to make you happy with this instrument.
