This is a really cool old Buckbee that I bought on eBay a couple of years ago. This was my "first" banjo, the one I first started plunking around on. I am still just barely plunking....
I was told by the previous owner that it is a Buckbee. If anyone can tell me anything different, please let me know, and I'll update the ad. And what about that cool silver inlay of "O/K" at the end of the fretboard - what is that all about?
Neck looks to be cherry, and rim looks like oak. Nice metal ring on back of the rim. Wood dowel, of course, with rosewood wedge in dowel stick.
It has original type friction tuning pegs for all 5 strings. They were very well fitted by the previous owner, and adjust easily and hold tune perfectly. I have never even had to put any rosin on them to keep it in tune. It still has the same original nylon strings that were on it when I bought it. It could probably use a set of Nylguts to get the best tone.
Neck has a little bit of relief, but not bad. Action with current bridge is actually lower than most clawhammer/frailers would like. It has a barn wood spillway bridge on it, and I have one that is taller, so if the buyer wants, I can measure string height and bridge height, and trade a different bridge for it.
Skin head, probably replaced at some point in it's life. It looks newer, not too yellow, and nice and thin - almost transparent in some places.
Speaking of thin, it has the typical old-skool "veneer" type fretboard. I actually thought about having a new ebony board put on it at one time, but I have a newer banjo and a newer fretless, so this one is probably better off original. It is the most original old banjo that I have ever seen, really. I'm not sure, but the tailpiece might even be original.
