The finest banjo that I have ever had in my hands. Here we have a 1927 Pre-war Mahogany Style 4 with five string conversion neck and original hardware. This banjo has the clarity, depth, and tone that you would expect from a pre-war Gibson.
I purchased this one at a good price from a music store that is going out of business. I have done a bit of clean up/set up work and am now looking to turn it over.
This is a superior banjo for both the collector and the player. This banjo was one of only two PBs that shipped in 1927 with the no hole archtop tone ring. It has rings on the double bound resonator and the tube and plate flange.
The most distinctive feature about this banjo is the outstanding no hole archtop tone ring. The 1927 no hole archtop is considered by some to be particularly good. I think Ralph Stanley played a no hole archtop Style 4 if I am not mistaken. I can tell you that this one will knock your socks off. I have it set up with a Bart Veerman Archtop Woodie Bridge which really brings out the bottom end. With this setup and this bridge this banjo rivals many pre-war flathead banjos of which I have played a handful of in my day.
To top it off this one is a player’s dream. I have no idea who made the neck but it is well done with a reasonably good neck to rim fit. The banjo plays spectacularly well and there is no fret wear (it looks like somebody leveled the frets recently.) She is ready for the stage and studio.
I grew up learning on my Dad’s 1935 TB-3 conversion and this is only banjo that I have ever played that has it beat! (Sorry Dad.)
The head and the bridge are obviously not original. Plectrum neck is also not included. Comes with an older Gold Star HS case. Money back if you aren’t satisfied.
