Gold Star banjo - model G11-FE
This is one of the very early Gold Star banjos from the mid to late 70s. It's all original, with the possible exception of the head, which looks to be an unmarked top frosted Remo. There is no Saga label inside, as was the norm on the earliest Gold Stars. Has only minimal fret wear. No major dents, dings, scratches, and no repairs.
Mahogany neck, mahogany resonator with dual concentric rings, double-cut peghead, full flying eagle inlay pattern on a rosewood board, nickel plated hardware, dual co-rods, tube and plate flange, 40-hole arch-top tone ring on a multi-ply maple rim, and heavy duty, adjustable Presto type tailpiece. Has "FLYING EAGLE" in the block.
This banjo has a slim and fast neck, unlike some of the later raised heads that I've encountered. The tone is a bit deeper than one would expect in an archtop, with surprisingly good bass response. The Stanley-style tone is in there, if one wishes to bring it out. It's all in the set-up, and the right hand of course. :^) It's currently set-up with an older Snuffy Smith bridge.
Will come shipped in a nice, American Vintage Series (AVS) arched lid hard case.
$1195 (or best offer) + shipping.
