This is one of the earliest Gold Star banjos that were made in Japan in the 70s-80s. So early in fact, there is no label or serial number inside the rim.
It has a mahogany neck and resonator. The fretboard is ebony. The neck has a double-cut peghead with the full "flying eagle" inlay pattern. The rim is maple and is fitted to a 40-hole archtop (raised head) tone ring. All hardware is nickel plated, including the tube and plate flange. It's currently set-up with non-frosted 5-Star head and Gary Sosebee bridge. It has capo spikes for the 5th string, and a custom armrest protector that was recently installed.
The frets show only minimal wear, with most being at the 3rd string-2nd fret. There are a few minor dings on the resonator, and a tiny chip at the tip of the peghead. For it's age, I'd say this banjo is in pretty remarkable condition overall.
If you're a fan of the Stanley-style tone, this raised head will deliver. No need to spend thousands more.
