I'm buying an older D-28 and have to thin the herd a bit to afford it. I bought this Cox Kentucky 5 just a few months ago from the 2nd owner. I'm not sure how long he had it. I called Jimmy Cox who estimated it to have been made in the early 90's. It plays and sounds great. Action is low. No buzzing. Maple neck and walnut resonator. Seemed like an odd combination to me but Jimmy said this was fairly common and it sounds good. Has a bridge made by a gentleman just a bit down the road from me that sounds very good. Comes with the hardshell case shown. I have no idea if it's original. Doesn't look brand new but is in excellent working order and protects the banjo well.
The banjo is in used condition - by that I mean it is not perfect. If you want something that looks immaculate or brand new this is not for you. There are nicks and dings here and there as you can see in the pictures. No cracks or anything major. This is a good players banjo and I have it priced accordingly. When I got it, the Kentucky 5 block was missing. Jimmy sent me a new one and I had in installed. The banjo has also been refretted. No buzzes or other issues. Around the 19th and 20th frets, you can see in the pictures where someone messed up a bit during the re-fret and the inlay had to be worked on so it is not perfect. I also have a pic of the heel which shows a spot in the finish. Spikes on 7, 8, 9 and 10.
If you want a good sounding banjo, you will not be disappointed. Were it not to fund another puchase I would keep it. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have or for more pictures. Thanks.
